S-Class cruises in as a hybrid with new driving assistance devices

Mercedes are now presenting the latest S-Class makeover. Apart from new drive options and assistants, the S-Class has a more strongly-angled radiator grille, as well as new bumpers, posh contour edges and a chrome strip beneath the air intakes. The highlights include a worldwide first series hybrid drive with lithium ion batteries. With a fuel consumption of 35.76mpg, the S400 is the most economic top-of-the-range saloon. The hybrid model is based upon the S 350 and the modified 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine is supplemented by a 20bhp electric motor. During decleration, the electric engine acts as a generator, recycling the energy from movement which is then saved to the lithium ion battery. Fitting this battery in the engine compartment ensures that the luggage compartment volume is not affected. The hybrid will be available from dealerships from June 2009 at a cost of 85,323 euros.
