Here's a lesson for the motor manufacturers - be wary who you lend your cars to.
Hannu Mikkola drove a Ford Escort MkI 16,000 miles to win the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally in 1970. Sure, it got some dents and bruises along the way but it still reached its destination and the Finn was reacquainted with the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend to give it a run out up the hillclimb.

"We won't know until we get the bonnet open - we can't at the moment - but I don't imagine we'll see much change out of seven or eight grand' said a Ford representative ruefully. Oh well, it could have been worse.
What would Hannu say?

"What would Hannu day?" - he would say do your research properly and you'll find this isn't the 1970 car but the 1995 car, which he also drove.

Says who? I was there too and it's listed as the 1970 car in the entry list.

Says me, I look after the Ford Heritage Collection and I sent the car to Goodwood. I'm afraid Goodwood made a mistake if they listed it as the 1970 one. The original car, the 1970 London to Mexico winner, is registered FEV 1H and is currently on loan from Ford to the Heritage Centre at Gaydon. This car, H1 FEV, was constructed in 1993 to compete in the London to Sydney rally, where is finished 11th. In 1995 it was rebuilt to compete in the 25th anniversary race of London to Mexico. Gunnar Palm and Hannu Mikkola drove, as they had done in 1970, and, like 1970, won. You can see how H1 FEV ended up in this condition at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7yQqPMO5hA
