PSA Peugeot Citroen has been forced into recalling nearly 100,000 Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s that were produced at the facility it shares with Toyota in the Czech Republic.
PSA claims the figure represents 8-10 per cent of the C1s and 107s built at the factory because the faulty accelerator pedal problem only affects cars equipped with the 2-tronic semi-automatic gearbox or those fitted with ESP.
The cars were built alongside the Aygo, one of eight Toyota models that make up the Japanese manufacturer's 1.8m vehicle recall in Europe due to sticking accelerator pedals.
Like the Aygo, the PSA models concerned were built between 2005 and August 2009. But as the problem only involves a limited number of cars, the precautionary recall in the UK will not be on the same scale as Toyota's.
Peugeot will be contacting 6671 owners of the 107 to rectify the issue, while just 36 C1s are affected as Citroen did not offer the 2-tronic gearbox with its version of the city car in the UK.
Both sets of PSA customers can expect to hear from the respective manufacturers within the next couple of weeks.
