The new government has announced it will introduce a nationwide network of charging points for electric and plug-in hybrids as part of the coalition deal announced by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

The joint agreement states that: "The parties agree to implement a full programme of measures to fulfil our joint ambitions for a low carbon and eco-friendly economy, including the establishment of a smart grid and the roll-out of smart meters."

This is keeping with the Conservatives pledge to create a national car recharging network, while the Liberal Democrats also spoke of the need for a 'zero-carbon Britain.'

The coalition also announced that it intends to scrap plans for a third runway at Heathrow and will ban any new runways at Gatwick and Stansted airports as well.

The establishment of a new high-speed rail network is intended to take some of the possible resulting strain on the transport infrastructure, with a connection between London and Scotland the priority.
