Most of us living in the south east have long suspected it, but now it is official – the M25 has been named as Britain's most depressing road.

The road, which circumnavigates London in a gruelling 117 mile loop, has topped the top ten list of roads which drivers dread.
The 3,000 respondents to a survey by Motorcycle News cited the state of road surfaces, speed cameras and traffic jams as reasons for labelling a road as crushingly awful.

The M6 near Birmingham had the dubious honour of coming second in the list, while another London road – the A1 Holloway Road – completed the top three.

Here is the top ten list in full:

1. The M25
2. The M6 along the Birmingham stretch
3. The A1 Holloway Road, London
4. The M5 near Bristol
5. The M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh
6. The A12
7. The M5 northbound between junctions 12 and 10
8. The A361 near Glastonbury in Somerset
9. The A30 near Bodmin in Cornwall
10. The A338 between Great Shefford and junction 14 of the M4
