Company car drivers could see their benefit in kind payments sharply increase from April if they're unlucky enough to fall into the new threshold for higher rate taxpayers.

The government is lowering the amount at which the 40 per cent tax rate is paid from £43,875 to £42,475 which should see around 750,000 of the nation's employees dragged into the higher band on April 6.

According to Fleet News, those unfortunate souls could see their company car benefit in kind charge (the amount levied by the treasury for private use of a company-owned vehicle) double overnight.

The specialist magazine claims that an employee paying £984 a year for driving an Audi A4 2.0 TDI SE will be faced with a £1,967 annual bill to go with their higher tax rate.

If you are one of the 750,000 people the Institute of Fiscal Studies expects to fall into the threshold trap, feel free to register your outrage below.
