Perfect wrapping...

The impressive Alfa Romeo MiTo will certainly turn your head. It's the same with an attractive woman. In both cases, we often say, "What a beautiful body...!" When a powerful engine wrapped in a fascinating form drives past, it's a feast for the eyes and a delight to the senses. Jeans are often the perfect wrapping for a woman's long legs. With that in mind, the two fashion designers, Bjork and McElligott, who are based in London and have already created a number of outfits for a variety of personalities, have now brought out a limited edition MiTo collection. The result is perfection...

Fiat: Will Opel be next after Chrysler?

After buying into the insolvent US Chrysler group, it seems that Italian car manufacturer Fiat are now more interested in ever than getting their hands on Opel. Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne announced that Opel would be the perfect partner for Fiat. There is indeed good reason for the increased interest shown by the Italians, since state funds of 3.3 billion euros could also cushion their Chrysler investment.

Opel's business has taken a boost from both the German "scrappage allowance", as well as from the new Insignia model which has been very well-received. Apparently Opel has 100,000 orders on its books, which has in fact led to extra shifts at their Rüsselsheim plant.

Retro hot-hatch: the Alfa MiTo GTA

Alfa Romeo's high-performance small car, the MiTo GTA is a welcome addition to the scene. A close-to-production version of the new top model is to be presented at the Geneva Auto Salon, with the series production model possibly hitting the market sometime this year. The front-wheel drive concept car is powered by a 240bhp, 1.75-litre turbocharged engine and the active suspension automatically adjusts its absorption to suit the prevailing road conditions. Optically, the top model of this three-door retro hot-hatch can be identified by its side air vents, roof spoiler and new front end, where the badge has been moved from the radiator grill to the bonnet.

OVERDESIGNED?

If you thought the design of the Peugeot 307 was a bit too aggressive, then you'll be gobsmacked by the enormous radiator grille of its direct successor, the 308.
Whereas its predecessor had a certain cohesion (the 307 was an all-round success), the 308 gives the impression that they have now pushed the concept just a little too far. The term that springs to mind is 'overdesigned'.

The bonnet with its deep-set headlights, pronounced nose and enormous radiator grille sporting a graceless integrated bumper, makes a ragged and disjointed impression.
If you stand behind and slightly to one side of the vehicle, you are struck by
the unfinished appearance of the prow with its prominent nose and wheel arches.
Even the area on the front wing that has been kept black to optically lengthen the side window-line looks out of proportion, just as in the Mercedes Benz B-Class.

The tail is broken up by lots of beading and gratuitous lines.
These comments should not be taken to imply that I feel that the more conservative the design, the more beautiful is the car. It is always a question of personal taste. But it certainly leaves us wondering what direction Peugeot will take with the next generation of the 308. Perhaps back to simplicity without being boring? This is after all where the skill lies in car design.

By contrast, the interior gives the impression of quality and success, especially with the optional leather dash.
Its flat A-pillars and the van-like quality of the cabin create an airy feeling of space.
At least no-one could accuse the 308 of being boring. And for that reason alone it should certainly attract a reasonable fan base.
