How not to reveal a car...

Michelle Heaton has given a fine demonstration of how not to reveal a car when whipping the covers off the 2011 Ford Fiesta on the Irish version of The Apprentice.

All the one-time pop singer had to do was say a few words, take one side of the sheet covering the car and walk to the back of the stage with it.

Sadly she only managed the first two of these considerable challenges successfully, the third proving rather tricky, as this video shows. Oops.

Chris Evans puts classic Ferrari up for sale

If you've got a lump of cash burning a hole in your pocket, we reckon you could do much worse than making radio DJ Chris Evans an offer for his 1959 Ferrari 250 LWB California.

The ginger car-nut bought the classic piece of automotive history in 2007, but no longer has room for it in his well-stocked garage following the purchase of a short-wheelbase California in 2008 which hit the record books, selling for a whopping £5.6 million.

While there is no price set on this pristine-condition Italian it's unlikely to go for quite as much. Though its rarity means it will probably still command a price tag with plenty of zeroes on the end.

And there'll be no need to worry about the car's heritage either; the 250 California comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Ferrari factory in Maranello.

On sale at HR Owen in South Kensington it is still in the original Verde Pino Metallizzato colour with a cream leather interior. Definitely one to add to the dream garage.

Gadget gifts: The Stig torch

Some say he eats batteries and has lightbulbs for eyes; some say the light shines out of his head, not his... oh, never mind, just check out this cool torch!

If you're a fan of BBC's Top Gear, and let's face it there are quite a few of them about, you'll know this white-suited character as The Stig, the programme's fearless racing driver tasked with setting the fastest lap times in supercar exotica.

The cult figure has spawned a huge amount of merchandise over the years, and this is the latest – a torch you can put on your car keys. Simply press the button on his back and light shines out of his head. Whether this happens in real life is unknown, but quite possible.

The Stig (torch version) requires three batteries to work, but you'll be pleased to hear these are included.

F1 world champ Surtees surfaces in France

The motorsport great John Surtees has become the first person to drive a sports car through the channel tunnel during a charity stunt. The drive was one of the events celebrating the 15th anniversary of the tunnel's opening.

The 1964 Formula 1 winner, who is still the only person to have claimed world records on both 2 and 4 wheels, drove an electric powered Ginetta G50 EV through the 31-mile tunnel.

He didn't break any speed records this time though as he had to stick to the 50km/h speed limit.

What didn't help with keeping a good time was also his constant stopping to have a closer look at the tunnel, which he called "a tremendous engineering feat".

"You certainly wouldn't want to be subject to any claustrophobic feelings down there. The tunnel is very small in parts," added the 75-year-old after eventually resurfacing in Coquelles, France.

California dreaming for football WAG

Diamonds might be a girl's best friend but a £140,000 supercar might just come close as one footballing WAG has just found out.

Melanie Slade, the long-term girlfriend of Theo Walcott, has just been presented with a brand spanking new Ferrari California by the Arsenal striker to celebrate her 21st birthday.

According to The Sun, the physiotherapist student is 'over the moon' and has already got personalised plates for the car.

It's a bit of a step up from the Volkswagen Beetle he bought her three years ago and the insurance premiums for the Ferrari are probably more than the Beetle was worth, but with a 193mph top speed we imagine Mel will find the upgrade more than makes up for the cost.

Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Festival of Speed is to be regarded more as a tribute to motorsport than as a serious race, even though this forms the backdrop to the whole occasion. It is perhaps best described as a cross between the Monaco Grand Prix and Royal Ascot. Over the weekend of the 3rd to 5th July, the Earl of March will play host to the 17th such event at his Goodwood Park estate. This year's special theme is 'True Grit - Epic Feats of Endurance'.

At the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed, main sponsor Mercedes-Benz will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows. The Mercedes-Benz museum will be sending across several original Grand Prix racing cars from its collection. These will include the W 25 which Manfred von Brauchitsch drove in the 1934 Eifel Race and last year's McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 in which Lewis Hamilton won the F1 World Championship. Goodwood is one of the finest celebrations of motorsport heritage, indeed of motorsport in general, as you can see for yourself from the highlights of last year's show in the gallery below.

Steve McQueen: a legend for your wrist

On 11th June 2009 in New York, a number of rare pieces belonging to film legend Steve McQueen will be auctioned. At the Antiquorum Important Collectors' Wristwatches Auction, McQueen's legendary chronograph, Monaco, will go under the hammer. He wore this watch whilst making Le Mans, the film about racing drivers, in 1971.The Monaco chronograph by Tag Heuer was brought out in 1969 to mark the Monaco Grand Prix. It features a square case, gleaming blue dial, white totalisers and red chronograph pointer. Tag Heuer recently reissued the chronograph on its 40th anniversary, in honour of Steve McQueen. Shortly after filming Le Mans, McQueen gave the watch to his financial adviser at the time, as a gift. It is estimated that the watch could fetch between 10,000 und 20,000 US dollars. Given McQueen's large fan base, this figure could actually be considerably higher.

Katy Perry: I kissed a Mini

The annual Life Ball takes place in Vienna on 16th May. Its star attraction will be Katy Perry, whose hits including 'I kissed a Girl' and 'Hot N Cold' have stormed the international charts. Vienna's Life Ball is the largest charity event in Europe to raise money for people living with Aids.

For this year's Ball, American designer duo 'The Blonds' have created a Mini, which Katy Perry will parade along the catwalk. According to BMW, the 'Katy-Mobil' is a special edition, designed for life in the spotlight, ultra-glamorous and oozing sex appeal. The open-top Mini comes in a pink leopard-print, with lots of glitzy accessories. This year, instead of an auction, there will be a prize draw for the Life Ball Mini, so for ten euros one lucky person will soon be able to imagine themselves as Katy Perry.

Lake Constance meets Hollywood

His appearances at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas always attract massive numbers of visitors. European auto fans had the chance to enjoy his mastery at Tuning World Bodensee. In fact, tuning icon Eddie Paul took part in the trade show on all four days, and was personally taking a close look at Europe's tuning scene. Paul has created cars featured in over 100 Hollywood film productions, including The Fast and the Furious, Grease and xXx. In addition, his gleaming red Ford Mustang is featured in the current Miss Tuning calendar alongside this year's Miss Tuning herself, Daniela Grimm.

German tuning companies continue to view market conditions optimistically. According to the mood at VDAT, Europe's largest association of private tuners, this is due not least to the high regard that 'Made in Germany' tuning products enjoy around the world. From April 30th to May 3rd, the international tuning industry had all of its innovative capacities on display at the 7th Tuning World Bodensee in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Featuring 250 exhibiting companies from around the world, more than a thousand tuned muscle cars and a unique supporting programme, it will provide a comprehensive overview of the tuning marketplace.

A world champion in wax

One week after being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire at the tender age of 23, Lewis Hamilton has been honoured once again. The world-famous waxworks museum Madame Tussauds in London has unveiled a likeness of the youngest Formula One world champion of all time.

"With his determination and stubborn persistence, he has undoubtedly earned a place in the country's affection, and with his fantastic achievement, he definitely merits a place alongside all the other greats," said a museum spokesperson. Lewis Hamilton's figure cost an amazing 160,000 euros to complete. The Formula One star in wax is wearing racing overalls and is carrying his helmet under his arm. They are already working on commemorative medallions ...
