Organisers of the Los Angeles Auto Show invited design studios based in Southern California to set out their vision for Mobile Teens in 2030 (Youthmobile 2030). Studies were drawn up by design studios at General Motors, Audi, Honda, Nissan, Mazda and Toyota. 2009 is the sixth year that this Design Challenge has been held. The winner will be announced on Press Day at the Los Angeles Auto Show, 2nd and 3rd December 2009.

Car Hero by General Motors can drive itself and is steered by mobile phone (that's if they are still around in 2030). Audi designers submitted two very bold design studies, the eSpira and the eOra, that are guided to their destination by hand movements (not a good idea for those of us who are not at our best in the mornings but nevertheless need to get to work). Nissan's V2G is an eco-friendly electrically powered car. This e-car has an aerodynamic egg shape and six wheels. In Mazda's Souga, the car's two occupants sit diagonally behind one another. According to its designers, buyers of the Souga will configure the car to suit their needs. Both Nissan and Toyota designers believe that, in 2030, vehicles travelling in the rush hour will often be joined together in groups of two or more. The Toyota's appearance can be digitally altered and tyre friction converted back into energy.

Gallery: LA Design Challenge 2009

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Andrew Hopkins

Green Steering Wheel Awards 2009: Toyota Prius & VW Blue Motion

Filed under: Toyota, Contests, Green, Volkswagen, Galleries, News

Two cars shared this year's eco prize - the Toyota Prius and the VW Blue Motion. Toyota's most fuel efficient hybrid car and Volkswagen's world-beating fuel economy car took the honours for this award, which has been in existence for only three years. The two winners beat the other finalists, the Ford Mondeo LPG, the Mercedes-Benz S400 hybrid and the Smart Car2Go, to the prize.

Gallery: Toyota Prius

Gallery: VW Golf BlueMotion

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Andrew Hopkins

Golden Steering Wheel Awards 2009: Renault Scenic

Filed under: Contests, Renault, Galleries, Vans, News

As with the supercars, the Golden Steering Wheel for MPVs was decided by readers' votes. Of the six vehicles in the frame, four were French. The Renault Scenic notched up 30.6% of over 250,000 readers' votes in 25 countries. The cars up for an award were: the Fiat Fiorino Qubo, Peugeot 3008 and 5008, Renault Kangoo Be Bob, the Scenic and the Toyota Verso.

Gallery: Renault Scenic

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pete Mait

Golden Steering Wheel Awards 2009: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Filed under: Supercars, Contests, Mercedes-Benz, Galleries, News

It appears that there's always a big demand for supercars. At least, that's what you would think looking at the many newcomers in this expensive section. In the Golden Steering Wheel awards, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG beat off its ten competitors in the supercar class. The darling of the Frankfurt Motor Show garnered almost a third of the votes in a poll of readers in Europe.

Amongst the hopefuls were: the Alfa 8C Spider available in a limited production run of 500 units, the beautiful Aston Martin One-77, the hottest 911 ever, the Porsche 911 GT3, the sweet-sounding Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, the mighty 1,001bhp Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport convertible, the new Ferrari California and the Audi R8 Spyder. Other cars in search of an award were: the Japanese cult car, the Nissan GT-R, the new iconic Mercedes SLS, plus the ZR1, which heralds the start of a new era for Chevrolet and the LF-A from Toyota subsidiary, Lexus.

Gallery: 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Andrew Hopkins

Golden Steering Wheel Awards 2009: Porsche Panamera

Filed under: Contests, Porsche, Galleries, Luxury , News

There were quite a few tasty offerings again this year in the luxury class. If you've got around £100,000 to spend on a luxury car, you're spoilt for choice. Six cars were nominated for an award. A quite different type of luxury limousine won in the shape of the Porsche Panamera. It came out on top against the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS, the new BMW 7 series, the recently up-dated Mercedes S-Class and the elegant Lexus LS. Its classic counterpart from England, the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, had no chance against the Porsche Panamera.

It's all change in the class, medium-size and above. Nothing is the way it used to be. The marketing strategies of the car manufacturers serve to mix the various classes and crossover is the new buzzword.
The VW Polo took the Golden Steering Wheel award in the small car category. The VW Polo has been around since 1975. The mark 5 version of Volkswagen's small car was launched in 2009. The Polo is available as a 3 or 5 door hatchback saloon. In its original form, it was sparsely equipped. The Polo is now much bigger than the first model. Visually, the new Polo with its broad C-pillars suggesting sturdiness and its wide stance, takes its cues from the current VW Golf. The Polo beat off the following cars: Ford Ka, Suzuki Alto, Hyundai i20, Toyota iQ, Citroen C2 und Nissan Pixo.

Gallery: VW Polo

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pete Mait

Shortlist: North American Car of the Year 2010

Filed under: Contests, Picture Galleries, Detroit Auto Show , News

It's difficult for any auto enthusiast to put into words why we care so much about these four-wheeled machines. Ford recently asked Mustang enthusiasts to do just that for a chance to win the new 2010 'Stang, and after pouring through thousands of 250-word essays, picking the top 25 and letting Mustang faithful vote for their favorite online, a winner has emerged. He is Kory Chesher of Edgewater, FL, a U.S. Army Specialist with the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division who is currently serving in Iraq. Chesher's essay recalls the first time he saw a Mustang when a 1968 black Fastback pulled into the left turn lane beside he and his dad at a stoplight. He was six years old at the time. He's never owned one and was saving up to buy his first Mustang when he returned to the U.S., and now thanks to Ford and his fellow Mustang enthusiasts who voted for his essay, Chesher will get a brand new 2010 Mustang and two tickets to the LA Auto Show for the car's world debut. Fortunately his group is returning to the U.S. this month, so Chesher should be able to make the show.

Chesher's 242-word essay, "A Life Obsession," follows:

It started when I was about 6 years old. I was in the truck with my father and we were at a stoplight. Across the road at the other light was this "car." It drew my attention away from everything else in the world. I asked my dad what it was and he simply said, "Oh, that's a Mustang."

I remember it like it was yesterday. I now know that it was a 1968 black Fastback. That was almost 20 years ago. Twenty years of love, addiction, obsession. Twenty years of longing and desire.

Now I'm a solider in the United States Army deployed to Iraq. I spend my spare time tearing through Mustang magazines that my family and total strangers are kindhearted enough to send to me. Every opportunity I get I'm online poring through forums and pictures; studying every little tidbit of knowledge I can get my hands on; meticulously memorizing seemingly insignificant trivia. Names, dates, specs, colors, paint codes, production numbers, costs, anything, everything.

A Mustang of my own wouldn't quell this life I live - it would supercharge it. The only thing greater than a life loving Mustangs is a life with a Mustang. With a Mustang to call my own I could finally experience the pride and freedom that I've only been watching from afar. It will ignite a passion like nothing I have ever experienced. Mustangs are my one true love.

I'm ready to go driving now.

Zebco, the fishing reel maker out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was recently asked to participate in the Sand Springs soapbox derby in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Upon hearing that aerospace companies would be at the party, the Zebco employees charged with devising an entrant figured they'd better bring their A-game. What they created was the object you see above: a three-wheeled, knee-height, fully-faired downhill racer that has to be one of the best looking soapbox challengers ever created. The credit crunch probably hasn't gotten around to the fishing reel industry yet, but if it does, might we suggest you call Boeing, Tesla and A123 to see what you can all come up with.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pete Mait
