Le Mans: Done and dusted for another year

So it all turned out fine for the French after all, as they got their very own Le Mans winner. Admittedly, it wasn't quite the dream ticket of a Peugeot driven by Frenchmen, but at least it was Peugeot – albeit crewed by the foreigners Marc Gené, Alexander Wurz and David Brabham. Still, the home crowd at last got to cheer a home-grown model past the chequered flag. This year as every year, though, you get the impression that the locals are outnumbered by the British fans who have crossed the Channel to support the likes of Aston Martin.

The icing on the cake for the home nation was the second-placed Number 8 entry driven by Stephane Sarrazin, Franck Montagny and Sebastien Bourdais, which made it a Peugeot one-two. The best that those serial winners from Ingolstadt could manage this time was third podium spot, but Audi have already responded with fighting talk about next year's race. Still, that's some way off in the future, so let's take a look back at what has happened over the last few days in general and over the last 24 hours in particular...

Le Mans: Playstation preparation

So anyone can be a Le Mans driver? To some extent, it's true. Providing you have a suitable games console in your living room, you can try your luck as a racing driver. Even professionals prepare themselves in this way. For example, Bruno Senna who is competing in the 24-hour classic event for the first time this year. He has never driven such long race stints before and certainly not at night.

"I've been preparing for the race on my Playstation," he revealed to autoblog. "The simulation on the Playstation is very accurate, but what you're obviously not getting are all the bumps and changes of surface or the sensation on those corners where the road is actually banked."

Despite the unfamiliar nature of the race, Bruno kept his foot down all the time, even in the dark. "That's when you have to drive more with your head than with your eyes." Which seems to endorse the principle of practising on a games console...

Following Honda shock: Senna cannot wait forever

Bruno Senna thought he was so close to realising his long-cherished Formula One ambitions. Then came the shocking news that Honda were withdrawing from F1 with immediate effect. Senna's main hope must now be that the team finds a buyer who also happens to be impressed by his recent test performance and by the potential pulling power of his name.

But the Brazilian has no intention of sitting on his hands. "We'll have to look around and see what other options are open to us," said Senna. "These things happen. It's never been easy to get into Formula One – you just have to keep plugging away and see what turns up."

Obviously, he is hoping that the now ex-Honda team keeps going: "And I'm not burn any bridges there, but I can't wait for ever... On the other hand, the financial situation is tough everywhere at the moment and it is difficult to see where things are heading. So in the circumstances, you have to be very flexible."
