Mitsubishi kitting out the cops

From November, the West Midlands constabulary will be setting an example to us all in terms of eco-friendly motoring when they become the first police force in the UK to send their officers out on patrol in the MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle). According to Mitsubishi, this electric motor on wheels was a huge hit at the National Police Show staged in September. The crime-busting version of the MiEV reaches a top speed of 80mph (130 km/h) and can cover a patrol beat of 100 miles before needing a recharge. So the bobbies should be well equipped for hot pursuits through the pedestrian zones in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Coventry.

What initially may sound like a joke is in fact part of the Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator project with which Mitsubishi hope to woo the British public for its progressive e-class. The Japanese manufacturer has already seen the first fruits of its campaign, with the MiEV being acclaimed as Electric Vehicle of the Year in the 2009 GreenFleet Awards.

UK traffic cops to get new set of wheels

In future, speeding drivers on Britain's roads could find an encounter with the new Vauxhall Insignia a miserable experience. The new police vehicles boast increased power and advanced technology. General Motors UK Special Vehicles are upgrading the UK police fleet with a special version of Vauxhall/Opel's mid-range model. GM are expanding their range of special fleet vehicles and expect this to prove a source of sound, long-term business.

Next time they're chasing villains, our officers have the choice of three powerful engine variants. For the real desperadoes, there's the 260bhp 2.8-litre V6 with AWD. On shorter missions, the constabulary could choose the 220bhp four-cylinder turbo. And for the local beat, there's the torquey 160bhp oil-burner. The police Insignia is only available as a Sports Tourer. Its 1430-litre load-carrying capacity provides ample room for operational kit and safety equipment. Vauxhall are supplying the police vehicle fully equipped with blue flashing light, siren, cameras, radio equipment and data link technology. The police Insignia also comes with an automatic number plate recognition system.

Italian State Police receive new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

It's generally never a good idea to try and outrun the the local constabulary, but that would be particularly true if you happen to be in Italy within the jurisdiction of Prefect Antonio Manganelli. Manganelli heads up the Italian State Police and he just took delivery of the latest police package special from the crew at Lamborghini. This time around the Bolognese automaker added the decals and lights to its new Gallardo LP560-4. Somehow the Lamborghini techs have managed to integrate all the gear that modern police officers regularly use into their diminutive supercar.

The car is equipped with a video recording system so officers can record evidence and provide entertainment for the boys in blue back at the station by transmitting it wirelessly in real time. The usual array of gun racks and radio equipment is also supplemented by a cooler in the front compartment that can be used to transport separated body parts to the local emergency room, or that finger you just shot off a "potential" suspect. The Rome police have been using a Gallardo cruiser for the last five years and accumulated 87,000 apparently problem-free miles while the Bologna police have racked up 62,000 miles in another example. You can check out video of their new police Lambo after the jump.

Man riding modified golf cart eludes police

Police in Utah observed a 26-year-old man doing donuts and wheelies in a golf cart at the city park, so they closed in on the suspect to issue a ticket. The cart driver decided that he wanted to test law enforcement in his modified super cart, so a five-minute chase through neighborhood lawns led the police and the cart-driving perp into an alfalfa field. Once there, the golf cart and its driver channeled the General Lee by jumping an irrigation ditch, leaving the police in the dust.

Unbelievably, the driver got away, at least for a day. Then next morning police arrested the driver at his grandmother's home, and he admitted to his crimes. It seems he was drunk (we know, big shock) and he didn't want to get into trouble. Good move, chief. Instead of a class B misdemeanor, the cart driver was slapped with a class three felony for evading police.
