Outsider view: Value for money

Skoda are now following up on the success of the Superb saloon with an estate version. When they first joined the VW group, they began by building smaller cars. Recently, however, the Yeti marked Skoda's entry into the compact SUV class and the two Superbs now represent a step up into the major league. It all seems to be paying off for the Czech carmaker. Good quality and a sensible balance between price and performance are the basis for sustained sales success. Also helpful to their cause are smart design and a steadily improving image. In cash-strapped times like these, it not only makes sense to base vehicle purchase on bang for bucks, it also makes you look intelligent. It will be interesting to see the extent to which the saloon and now the estate version of the Superb enable Skoda to make inroads into sales of the VW Passat and other premium marques.

Outsider view: In-house competition?

Firstly, compact SUVs are still selling well. Secondly, VW supremo Ferdinand Piëch likes to see a healthy dose of in-house competition. From these two premises flows a third: alongside the Audi Q5 and VW Tiguan, Skoda have now weighed in with the Yeti, one more compact SUV on the Volkswagen AG books. And we won't have to wait too long till an Audi Q3 version is served up as well. Despite trying times, the positive figures posted by the group have vindicated its strategy. However, cannibalisation effects within the individual brands have been detectable – for example, the Q5 has been nibbling away at Q7 sales – even if they aren't admitting it. Maybe the various badges will start to devour each other some time in the near future?

Skoda Yeti: a robust Czech

Skoda are using the international stage of the Geneva Motor Show to premier their vision of the future: the Yeti is Skoda's interpretation of a compact SUV. This model bears some characteristic features that we have already seen on the Roomster concept. Design accents are the wide wrap-around windscreen and concealed A-pillars. The roof panel also reflects the new direction that design at Skoda is taking and which the Roomster has already hinted at.

The styling is entirely devoid of any aggressive traits and the Yeti has a positive and friendly appearance, in stark contrast to most SUV and off-roaders on the market. But this concept vehicle will not only shine off the beaten track: with its compact dimensions and generous interior, it is also eminently suitable for urban use. The Yeti is well equipped for transport duties as befits a vehicle of its class; once the back seats are removed, the boot offers up to 1,760 litres of luggage space.

Skoda Superb - Reincarnation of the true Passat

As we wander through a suburban idyll, we come across neat rows of houses, carefully tended gardens and – yes, you've guessed – a VW Passat on every drive.
Actually, I'm not one for generalising – it would be quite wrong to suggest that only lawn-mowing dads own a Passat. From my own experience, however, I can confirm that a disproportionate number of insurance salesmen seem to have an affinity for this model. As for what really constitutes the typical Passat owner, I'll leave you to conclude from the clichés doing the rounds.

VW's deliberate attempt with the last model change to enhance the market position of the Passat has clearly impacted on the price – the justification no doubt being the chrome bib and monster overhangs. The odd customer in the upper mid-range may have identified the Passat as a more affordable alternative for himself. However, if you're a dad who lives in one of those neat suburban houses, yet you're unwilling to jump aboard the people-carrier bandwagon and the Passat seems to have moved out of your price bracket, Skoda seem to have come up with a suitable alternative.
And you don't even need to turn your back on your favourite manufacturer, because the Superb is built on a familiar platform of VW components. (Including discarded 'Pumpe Duse' diesel technology)

A huge saloon car with plenty of back-seat room for the offspring, an economic and affordable diesel engine and a boot in which you can comfortably stow corpses. At a starting price of 25,000 euros, it's a snip. Despite the design which takes itself far too seriously, this one is destined for success.

Skoda Octavia Facelift - Superb!

Let's try and get away for one minute from the mass hysteria that has been unleashed by countless prototypes, concept cars and 'visions' and back to the nitty gritty. While others are coming up with spaceshuttles and eco-hi-tec ultra-versatile models, the manufacturers of 'normal' cars are trying to drum up a bit of interest in their recent releases – even though some of these amount to little more than a facelift.

Currently in the limelight, the Skoda Superb has already received quite few advance bouquets from press columnists. So that the whole Skoda family can enjoy the benefits, the smaller Octavia has now undergone a cosmetic operation to restore the family resemblance. The Octavia now wears a more serious countenance and Skoda have also given the cabin a more upmarket material look (i.e. the usual facelift routine). They have raided the VW parents' larder for the latest in air-conditioning and satnav controls.

There's just one thing that Skoda can't get right, even with the nipped-and-tucked Octavia: the B and C pillars sprayed in the same colour as the rest of the car break up the smooth window line and make the Octavia appear higher in its side profile than actually necessary. Well, it takes all sorts...
